A cheesemonger from south of the border is taking Australian cheese-making to the next level by making homemade cheese sauces.
A couple of months ago, James and Jennifer Zavala bought a can of their homemade cheese-flavoured cheese sauce for $60 from a supermarket.
The sauce has a slightly sweet, creamy flavour and is easy to make at home.
“We have been making it for about a year and we think it’s pretty darn good, actually,” James said.
“I don’t think I’ve ever tasted anything like it.
I like to mix it with something different, so I have a lot of people coming up to me saying they want to try it.”
The couple’s cheesemongs are now available in Australian supermarkets and online, but the cheese sauce is a popular option in other countries.
“It’s pretty well-known in the UK and we have seen it in the US, in Europe and in Japan,” James explained.
“So it’s been popular for quite some time.”
When I got my first can, it was a bit of a shock.
“Food-safety expert Sarah Browning said a well-made cheese sauce was one of the best ways to get your family back on a healthier diet.”
If you are looking to try and reduce your risk of stomach problems, a well made cheese sauce can be a great way to do that,” she said.
Sarah said there were no known side effects to using a cheese sauce.
